Brewers Done Pursuing Derrek Lee; Pirates Unlikely To Get Draft Pick

Milwaukee Brewers general manager says his team won't be getting first baseman Derrek Lee.

We're probably going to do everything internally right now. We did have a discussion with Derrek Lee, but that's not going to happen, so we'll probably just go internally. Travis Ishikawa and Taylor Green may get some more at bats here.

This news is significant for Pirates fans because, if Lee were to sign a major-league deal with the Brewers (or another team), the Pirates would get an extra compensation pick in the 2012 draft. That pick could potentially be helpful for the Pirates, not only due to the pick itself but because its existence would increase the Bucs' draft budget. The new Collective Bargaining Agreement prevents the Pirates from spending as freely in the draft as they have in recent years.

There probably wasn't much of a chance of the Pirates getting a pick for Lee anyway, but this news makes it even more likely.
