The Pirates have claimed Oscar Tejeda from the Red Sox and designated reliever Doug Slaten for assignment.
Tejeda has played mostly second base and outfield recently. He hit just .262/.294/.396 for Class AA Portland (Maine), and it's his second season there, but he's only 22, so maybe the Pirates think he has some kind of future with the bat. It certainly doesn't look like he does, however. I assume he'll head to Class AA Altoona. Barring a dramatic improvement, it's hard to believe he'll have much of a future with the Pirates. I'm sure Red Sox fans aren't overly concerned about losing him.
The Pirates dropped Slaten from the 25-man roster on Tuesday to make room on the roster for another utility player, Drew Sutton. Slaten is the second lefty reliever the Pirates have dropped this week, having also designated Daniel Moskos for assignment.
