Over at Bucs Dugout, I write about the new Competitive Balance Lottery, which takes place Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. (although we won't hear about the results until 2:45 p.m.).
↵Basically, six teams will receive an extra draft pick after the compensation pick that follows the first round, and six more will receive a pick after the second round. The Pirates are one of 14 teams eligible for these picks, so it's pretty likely they'll get one. I won't go into any more detail, because there's a whole mess of piddling rules there, but know that by late Wednesday afternoon, the Bucs may well have an extra draft pick for next year. They can choose to trade the pick this year at the trading deadline if they like (unlike other draft picks, which you're not allowed to trade), but they can't trade it during the offseason. It's not really clear why, but if you're a Pirates fan, just take your free draft pick and enjoy it, okay?
