The Pittsburgh Pirates loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but couldn't capitalize as they were swept by the Chicago Cubs 4-2.
Brock Holt opened the bottom of the ninth with a single to left. Carlos Marmol walked Starling Marte, but got Andrew McCutchen to pop out to second base. Marmol then walked Garrett Jones, but settled down from there. Gaby Sanchez went down swinging and Pedro Alvarez flied out to left to end the game.
Jeff Locke pitched a strong game, going six innings and striking out six. He gave up two solo home runs by Josh Vitters and Anthony Recker.
The Pirates got on the board quickly with a McCutchen solo home run in the first inning. Brock Holt scored after a balk in the bottom of the seventh inning, but that would be all the offense for the Pirates.
The Pirates were 0-11 with runners in scoring position and they left 13 batters on base.
With the loss, the Pirates are now two games out of the wild card race.
