Steelers Coach Ray Horton, Cardinals Likely To Reach Agreement

Steelers defensive backs coach Ray Horton should meet with the Arizona Cardinals today to strike a deal to make him their defensive coordinator, ESPN reports. The Cardinals also would hire former Steelers defensive lineman Deshea Townsend as an assistant to Horton.

This comes as ... well, much less of a surprise than Dick LeBeau taking the job would have. Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt used to be the Steelers' offensive coordinator, and the Cardinals' defensive coordinator job was connected first to LeBeau, which didn't make any sense, and then to Steelers linebacker coach Keith Butler, which made only a little more sense and was quickly quashed when the Steelers refused to let the Cardinals talk to Butler. After all that, the Cardinals finally got their Steelers coach. Good for them, I guess.

The Cardinals had one of the worst defenses in the NFL last year, and they gave up a ton of yards on the ground in particular; it remains to be seen how a secondary coach like Horton will help out with that.
