Steelers Salary Cap: Ben Roethlisberger, James Harrison Could Re-Work Contracts

The Trib reports that Ben Roethlisberger and James Harrison might be willing to re-work their contracts in order to help the Steelers get under the salary cap.

The agents for quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and outside linebacker James Harrison said their clients are agreeable to restructuring their contracts before the start of the NFL’s new year. Teams have to be under the 2012 salary cap by 4 p.m. March 13.

The Steelers have spent the past couple weeks trying to shed salary, and they’ve already gotten Lawrence Timmons, Ike Taylor and LaMarr Woodley to adjust their contract in order to make cap room. They also released Bryant McFadden and Arnaz Battle. They may end up releasing veteran receiver Hines Ward as well, despite Ward being willing to take a pay cut.

Of course, the practice of restructuring contracts to make cap room isn’t unusual, especially for the Steelers. The Trib notes that Roethlisberger and Harrison both restructured their deals last year as well.
