Steelers OTAs: Cortez Allen To Get First Crack At Nickel Back

The Pittsburgh Steelers are still looking to see who will play in the secondary now that William Gay left for Arizona. As of now it looks as though Cortez Allen has the inside track to get the nickel back position that Gay left behind, according to Pittsburgh Tribune-Review writer Mark Kaboly.

Kaboly says that despite having not played the position formally while in college, Allen knew the concept of the position in case he had to play it in an emergency.

Neal Coolong of Behind the Steel Curtain profiled what Allen was able to do during the season last year.

Allen showed flashes of outstanding all-around ability, in particular, as part of a great team defensive effort against offensive powerhouse New England in a 25-18 Week 8 victory. With a team deep with young cornerbacks, the youngest of them, Allen, looks to lock down one of the league's toughest positions.

For a position that requires the back to know exactly what is going on with every player on defense, Allen has a tall order entering this season.
