Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Mundy was fined $21K for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Oakland Raiders wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey during the Raiders 34-31 victory over the Steelers on Sept. 23.
Mundy hit Heyward-Bey in the end zone early in the fourth quarter of the game and was not penalized at the time. Heyward-Bey laid motionless on the field for several minutes before being carted off on a stretcher, but managed to give a thumbs up on his way off the field. He was taken directly to a hospital from the field, where he stayed overnight. Heyward-Bey was released from the hospital on Monday and is expected to make a full recovery after suffering a concussion and a neck strain.
This is the first fine of Mundy's career and the second fine for the Steelers this season. Linebacker Lawrence Timmons was also fined $21K for his hit on New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez in Week 2.
