With losses by Penn State and Pitt this week, there isn’t a snowflake’s chance that any local teams wind up in the college football polls, but let’s take a look at how the rankings are likely to shake out. There were no losses by top ten teams this week (and that includes Ohio State), and I doubt No. 1 Oregon or No. 2 Auburn will see any movement (despite Oregon’s close win over Cal). No. 3 TCU had to stage a comeback over San Diego State, however, while No. 4 Boise State had an easy 52-14 win over Idaho on Friday, so it’s possible TCU and Boise State could switch places.

After that, LSU had an easy win this week and should hold steady at No. 5. No. 6 Wisconsin put up a ridiculous 83 points against Indiana and should hold as well. No. 7 Stanford had a close win against Arizona State, so it’s possible the Cardinal could get leapfrogged by No. 8 Ohio State or No. 9 Nebraska, but I doubt it. No. 10 Michigan State was off. The AP Poll this week could look something like this:

1. Oregon
2. Auburn
3. Boise State
4. TCU
5. LSU
6. Wisconsin
7. Stanford
8. Ohio State
9. Nebraska
10. Michigan State

Obviously, there won’t be any Big East teams in the top 25. In the Big Ten, the top 25 should probably include Iowa in addition to Wisconsin and Ohio State, but the Hawkeyes will take a tumble this week after Northwestern came from behind to beat them.

Penn State and Pitt are both making inroads in the SB Nation BlogPoll Top 25, SB Nation’s weekly college football ranking. Both are in the “others receiving votes” category. While Pitt’s game against an unranked UConn team this Thursday is probably unlikely to make much of a difference, Penn State has a very clear path into next week’s top 25 if it can pull off an upset against Ohio State. The Buckeyes are ranked ninth in the poll.

Other Big Ten teams in the poll include Wisconsin (No. 7), Michigan State (No. 11), and Iowa (No. 13). Penn State is currently a game and a half behind the Spartans and a game behind OSU, Wisconsin and Iowa in the Big Ten standings. A win this week obviously won’t get them to the top, but it would help their national standing quite a bit – both their games against ranked teams so far (Alabama and Iowa) have resulted in losses, and a win against a top team would probably convince many of the voters that despite Penn State’s uneven season so far, there’s something in there.

Pitt, Penn State and WVU were all out of the AP poll last week, and that's unlikely to change this week. WVU was idle, Pitt was on the fringes of the poll last week but was idle (and will probably need another win or two to crack the rankings), and the Nittany Lions, despite a come-from-behind win against Northwestern, wasn't close enough to being in the rankings last week for a win against an unranked team to get them there. A win next week against eighth-ranked Ohio State would surely get the Nittany Lions some consideration, however. Pitt could potentially sneak into the rankings with a win, but that seems unlikely, since they're playing UConn, which is also unranked. WVU plays Cincinnati next week and won't be a factor in the rankings. Penn State at Ohio State, then, is the local game to watch next week.

There aren't likely to be huge changes at the top of the poll, since Oregon, Boise State, Auburn and TCU all won big. After that, things get tricky - No. 5 Alabama lost to No. 12 LSU, and No. 6 Utah was the victim of the drubbing by TCU. No. 9 Nebraska, meanwhile, won only narrowly over Iowa State. Big Ten teams Wisconsin (No. 7), Ohio State (No. 8), Iowa (No. 15) and Michigan State (No. 16) all were either idle or won this week.

Wisconsin, Ohio State and Michigan State are all fighting to climb the BCS standings - BCS Evolution thinks they'll be at Nos. 8, 9 and 11 this week. No Big East teams should be anywhere near the top 15.
