Sidney Crosby managed to extend his scoring streak by assisting on Evgeni Malkin’s goal in the first period, but a third-period collapse led to a 4-1 Penguins loss against the New York Rangers. The Malkin goal, in which Crosby faked a slapshot before passing to Malkin on the left side of the goal, was the only score through two periods, but Erik Christiansen added a power play goal for the Rangers midway through the third period to tie the game, and Alexander Frolov scored on a rebound just 15 seconds later to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead. Artem Anisimov put a wrist shot past Brent Johnson with about five minutes to go, and then Brian Boyle added yet another Rangers goal about two minutes later.

Brent Johnson, playing for Marc-Andre Fleury for the first time in what seems like an eternity, stopped only 18 shots. The Pens have now lost their last two, and against their two top division rivals, which is a shame.

After the end of their 12-game winning streak against the Philadelphia Flyers last night, the Penguins will try to recover tonight at 7:00 at CONSOL Energy Center against another divisional rival, the New York Rangers. The two teams last met on November 29, when Marc-Andre Fleury recorded 25 saves en route to a 3-1 victory. That was the game in which the Rangers' Brandon Dubinsky characterized Sidney Crosby of being a dirty player after Crosby allegedly slewflooted a Rangers player. Since then, the Rangers have padded their points total with two wins over the woeful New York Islanders, split a pair of games with the Ottawa Senators, lost to the Columbus Blue Jackets and, most recently, blown out the Washington Capitals.

Meanwhile, Dubinsky has seven points in his last six games, and Crosby is riding a 19-game scoring streak. We'll see if Dubinsky encounters some boos tonight in Pittsburgh.

The Flyers took over the Atlantic Division lead after beating the Penguins last night, but the Pens can take it back if they beat the Rangers and the Flyers lose to the Canadiens tonight in Montreal. That game is at 7:30.
