Though he tried, Jermaine Marshall couldn't do it all himself.

Despite the freshman's 18 points off the bench for Penn State, the Nittany Lions fell 83-68 to No. 10 Purdue Wednesday night to Purdue as a result of continued shoddy perimeter defense.

Marshall's 18 points were offset by Purdue's Ryne Smith, who led all scorers with 20 points on 5-5 shooting from 3-point territory. JaJuan Johnson contributed a big double double for the Boilermakers with 15 points and 15 rebounds and Lewis Jackson contributed 17 points of his own to lift Purdue to a big win in Happy Valley.

The Boilermakers rode a 6-13 performance from the arc and 46-31 domination on the glass to their ninth straight victory and third straight to open Big Ten play. On the flip side, the loss by Penn State drops the Lions to 8-6 overall on the season and 1-2 in the conference. Their postseason hopes remain increasingly in doubt.

The night wasn't completely lost for Penn State, though. Talor Battle matched Marshall's 18 points and Jeff Brooks finished with a double-double himself with with 15 points and 10 rebounds. The Lions also got a nice contribution from center Andrew Jones for the first time in a while as the senior finished with six points thanks to three early field goals, but it wasn't enough.

Penn State hung tough with Purdue in the first stanza, trailing by only four points at halftime. The Boilermakers blew things open in the second half, however, dominating the Lions on the offensive glass to the tune of 13-6, grabbing a bunch of second chance points and rarely taking their foot off the accelerator. Purdue led by as many as 17 at points in the second half and held on for the win with ease.

Things don't get any easier for the Lions as they now prepare to host No. 19 Purdue at the Jordan Center on Saturday afternoon. The Lions dropped both contests with the Spartans last season and haven't beaten them since 2008 at the Breslin Center

Purdue leads Penn State 31-27 after one half at the Bryce Jordan Center. Here are some notes on the action so far.

Jermaine Marshall has been a real spark off the bench for Penn State with six points in the half. He's been getting a lot of Tim Frazier's minutes at guard and he's making the most of them. Coach Ed DeChellis hasn't given Marshall a whole lot of playing time to this point, but with Taran Buie still suspended and the Lions in desparate need of a scorer outside of the big three, he must have been willing to give the red shirt freshman a shot.

Penn State held E'Twaun Moore and JaJuan Johnson to eight combined points in the half. If they can carry that success in guarding those two over to the second half, it'll bode very well for the Lions.

Talor Battle is only 2-11 from the field for four points at the half. With six NBA scouts in the building tonight, he'd do well to overcome the adversity to lift his team against one of the best teams in the country. He'll have to take better shots to do it, though.

Penn State's man-to-man defense has looked rough for the better part of the last two games now. The Lions are doubling too often and leaving an open man on the perimeter and they're paying for it big time, tonight at the hands of Purdue's Ryne Smith who is 3-3 from deep.

Andrew Jones has been active for Penn State with six first half points. He's been very quiet so far in the conference season, but has been looking for his shot this evening and has been rewarded. He'll need to keep up the good work in the second half if the Lions are going to have a chance.

Jeff Brooks was held to four points in the half. It'd be nice to see him become a little more active.

Following a disappointing loss at Michigan on Friday evening, Penn State will look to rebound tonight when the it hosts No. 10 Purdue at 6:30 on the Big Ten Network.

The Nittany Lions are 3-1 this season coming off a loss, but will be facing a very tough Purdue team that features big scorers E'Twaun Moore and JaJuan Johnson, though the Boilermakers will be without star Robbie Hummel who is out for the season with a torn ACL.

Penn State narrowly fell to Purdue at the Bryce Jordan Center last spring when the Boilermakers came to State College for the Lions' last home game of the season. That day, the Penn State held Moore to nine points and as a result, played the Purdue tough, falling by only two points to a team that clinched a share of the Big Ten championship with the win.

Tonight, Penn State will be without transfer Chris Babb, who scored 17 points in that game. However, the Lions will be looking for big nights out of David Jackson and Jeff Brooks who have posted double figures in scoring in each of Penn State's first two games of the conference season.
