The Cleveland Browns were clearly worried that a team below them might make a play for Alabama running back Trent Richardson. The team gave up a handful of late-round selections to the Minnesota Vikings as a preventative measure, moving up one spot to ensure that they could get their man.

With the bizarre, underwhelming departure of Peyton Hillis, this move makes sense for the Browns, who have a serious lack of playmakers on their offense. There was speculation that the team could be a player for Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill, but how can you really evaluate Colt McCoy without surrounding him with adequate talent? Richardson will step in immediately behind a stout offensive line lead by left tackle Joe Thomas and center Alex Mack. Expect him to become the bell cow for Cleveland — he's a three-down player who can do it all and should touch the ball 350-plus times in 2012.

Look for the Browns to address right tackle and wide receiver with another first-round pick (22) and an early second-rounder (36).

Chad Reuter's seven-round 2012 NFL mock draft has the Steelers making a not-so-surprising pick at No. 24: Alabama linebacker Dont'a Hightower.

The age of Pittsburgh's defense might push them toward a versatile player like Hightower, who can play outside or inside. The Steelers aren't afraid to build depth at a position instead of filling what people perceive as their more immediate need.

Let's skip right past that, though, and check out the Steelers' second-round pick. It's Midwestern State guard Amini Silatolu, who would make sense both positionally (the Steelers don't draft purely for need, but they need guards badly) and in terms of talent.

In the third round, the Steelers take Cincinnati running back Isaiah Pead, which again makes a lot of sense (and although there aren't a ton of multi-round mock drafts out there, this isn't the first one I've seen that has had the Steelers picking Pead. With Rashard Mendenhall on the shelf, the Steelers will try to find an extra running back in the draft to help Isaac Redman.

In the fourth round, the Steelers snag Alabama defensive tackle Josh Chapman, which would be a fantastic pick that late. I'd be mildly surprised if he were still on the board, and I think the Steelers would be awfully tempted if he were still there. Chapman had surgery to fix his ACL in January, and if that hadn't happened, he probably would be taken a lot earlier than this.

Pittsburgh then grabs WVU cornerback Keith Tandy in the fifth round.

This would be a terrific draft for the Steelers, who'd get a lot of talent that also addresses areas of need.

NFL Network's Mike Mayock has become a highly respected TV analyst and draft scout over the past decade, and on Wednesday, he released his first and only mock draft just a day before the first selection is made. There's certainly no consensus among mock drafts on which way the Steelers will go late in the first round at No. 24, with some predicting an offensive linemen as the choice while others list a variety of defensive players along the front seven.

Mayock, however, has a name many Steelers' fans have become familiar with in the run up to the draft. He projects Cordy Glenn will be the pick, and has this to say about the Georgia tackle:

Glenn is an athletic big man who is fluid when pulling and gets upfield with ease. He is an effective mirror blocker who shows good technique by sitting into his base and controlling defenders. He is aware of stunts and blitzes and usually picks them up with ease. He is a big body who has been a durable starter for Georgia.

In Mayock's opinion, Courtney Upshaw, who the Steelers have hosted, will go one spot ahead of Pittsburgh with the No. 23 pick to the Lions. Dontari Poe and Dont'a Hightower, however, are both still available in this scenario.

With a little more than 24 hours before the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft in New York, the misinformation, rumors, and smokescreens are spreading rampantly through the media. Despite conflicting information, the top of the draft seems to be solidifying but mock draft projections are still split on which way the Steelers will go with the No. 24 pick. There have been plenty of mocks predicting Pittsburgh chooses an offensive lineman, while others have them targeting a prospect to add to the defensive front seven.

Mel Kiper, in the fifth version of his mock draft released on Wednesday, projects the Steelers selecting a massive defensive tackle in Dontari Poe. Via Mel Kiper of ESPN:

This is a great value and a big need for the Steelers. Poe fits the physical profile of the heir to Casey Hampton, a true nose tackle. But I think Poe is athletic enough to be a 3-technique in Dick LeBeau's system. The Steelers really need to build up the depth on the defensive line, and Poe is a great fit.

Poe was a workout wonder at the Combine in February, running a 4.87 in the 40-yard dash at 346 pounds. He would likely make an instant impact on the interior for Dick LeBeau's defense.

The 2012 NFL Draft begins on Thursday, and beyond the first two picks, no one really knows what is going to happen with any of the selections. If someone tells you that they do, they're lying. That makes it incredibly hard for people around the Internet and elsewhere to try and predict the first round in their mock drafts. Dave Bryan at Steelers Depot took it a step further (six actually) by trying to predict every pick that the Steelers will make this weekend. You can read more about all of the prospects he assigns to the Steelers in the article, but here are the first few players he believes the Steelers will be drafting.

In the first round he has them taking USC outside linebacker Nick Perry, who he explains could be the eventual successor to James Harrison when he eventually has to step away. The Steelers need help at linebacker, but I think most would agree that inside linebacker is their greater need, not outside. The Steelers fill their offensive line need with their second round pick, guard Brandon Brooks out of Miami (OH).

Casey Hampton isn't getting any younger, so Bryan has the Steelers taking a possible nose tackle replacement in Michigan's Mike Martin in the third round. He projects the Steelers to take San Diego State running back Ronnie Hillman in the fourth round. Hillman could help Rashard Mendenhall in the backfield while he recovers from his knee injury.

Again, check out all of the picks in this seven round pre-draft mock.

Behind The Steel Curtain's awesomely detailed new seven-round 2012 NFL mock draft is up, and now is a great time to take note if you haven't already. BTSC has been doing these enormous mocks for months, and they know what's up. This version has the Steelers picking not Dont'a Hightower -- although he's available with their selection at No. 24 -- but, rather, Georgia offensive lineman Cordy Glenn.

Cordy Glenn would fill the Steelers biggest need and he has the versatility to play both guard and tackle. He had a good combine measuring in at 6’5", 346lbs., with 34.75in arms but still being able to run a 5.15 40 and do 31 reps on the bench press. I’ve mocked Hightower to the Steelers almost since the beginning of the draft season but with Glenn available I just can’t see the Steelers passing him up.

The question is whether Glenn will get to the Steelers; most mocks have him going off the board before they pick. In the second round, the Steelers take Cincinnati defensive end Derek Wolfe, who had a pre-draft visit with the Steelers. In the third round, it's another Cincinnati player, running back Isaiah Pead. In the fourth, the Steelers take WVU cornerback Keith Tandy.

This would be a frustrating draft for some fans, in that the Steelers wouldn't really be addressing their needs at inside linebacker and nose tackle, but they'd be getting a bunch of talent.
