In the final non-conference season of the year, Pitt laid an egg and was upset by visiting Wagner. The Seahawks entered the game 7-3 and had been playing well, but Pitt simply looked awful in this one.

For a while, neither team seemed as if they wanted to win. With every missed Wagner shot (they had only two field goals within an approximate ten-minute stretch), Pitt failed to capitalize, turning the ball over and missing shot after shot of its own.

The Panthers played arguably their worst game of the season, hitting only about 40 percent of their shots. Pitt showed that they clearly are lacking another go to scorer in this one. Ashton Gibbs struggled mightily – even though he ended up with 14 points, he shot only 5-for-15 from the field and was held scoreless in the first half. The Panthers are clearly missing Tray Woodall and tonight it was wildly evident.

Not only did Pitt shoot poorly from the field, they also couldn’t hang onto the ball and made a number of sloppy turnovers. Part of that was due to Wagner’s full-court pressure throughout the game, but Pitt also did their part by committing turnovers even when no pressure occurred.

Pitt was able to make things interesting, pressuring Wagner into a would-be turnover when they were only down by three, but J.J. Moore committed a costly foul as the ball was sailing out of bounds. Wagner hit the ensuing free throws and after some misses by Pitt, wrapped up the game.

The Panthers simply didn’t look all that interested in playing a good game tonight. Whether it was because of Christmas break or not, Jamie Dixon’s squad didn’t display any type of urgency in this one until the final minutes. Clearly, this squad has some work to do to get ready for the Big East season … which is here now.

Pitt is off to an uncharacteristically slow start and the team finds themselves trailing 29-25 at the half.

The Panthers’ leading scorer, Ashton Gibbs, is having his worst game of the season. He’s been held scoreless and is 0-7 from the field. Pitt does hold the rebounding edge, as expected, but is simply not shooting the ball well. The Panthers have hit only eight of their 23 shots and have no players in double figures. Wagner, on the other hand, has two – guards Kenneth Ortiz and Tyler Murray each have ten points so far.

Pitt is also having some trouble holding onto the ball as they have nine turnovers. Wagner has used full-court pressure to force Pitt into some mistakes and it’s clearly giving the Panthers some problems.

Talib Zanna is leading the way for Pitt with six points and six rebounds off the bench.

Pitt's last non-conference game of the season could be a slightly challenging one. The Panthers will take on 7-3 Wagner Friday night at the Pete. The Seahawks have played well this year and could put up a fight against Pitt.

Wagner has three losses, but two of them have come by a combined six points. Maybe even more impressive is the fact that they played UConn fairly closely on the road, losing by only 12. The Seahawks haven't been blown out this season and should give Pitt a pretty good game.

Part of the reason the Seahawks have had some success is because of their depth and balance. Five players average more than eight points and game so even if one or two players are taken out of the equation, there are others that can step up. But Wagner's problem isn't so much scoring as it is rebounding. The Seahawks don't have a single player averaging even five rebounds per game and Pitt should be able to take advantage of that.

Another thing to look for is that this may be Pitt's last game without starting point guard Tray Woodall. Woodall isn't a lock to return for the first Big East game against Notre Dame next week, but it is a possibility. He was playing as well as almost any point guard in the country this season before his injury and Pitt will be a much better team once he returns.

If Pitt can manage to win, the Panthers could be in for a bump up in the polls. No. 10 Marquette and No. 11 Kansas both lost on Monday and Pitt should jump over both teams with a victory.
