A late comeback bid failed, and the Penguins will end the calendar year with a 3-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils.

In a penalty-packed first period, Ilya Kovalchuk scored on a penalty shot and David Clarkson had a power-play goal as the Devils left the ice with a 2-0 lead. In the second period, the Penguins had 12 shots to the Devils’ five, but they couldn’t get anything going against Martin Brodeur. (Brodeur finished with 29 saves.)

The Penguins did manage to make some noise in the third period, as Chris Kunitz’s power-play goal cut the lead to 2-1. But Zach Parise scored an empty-netter with less than a minute to play to dash the Pens’ hopes.

Kovalchuk was involved in all three goals, and finished with a goal and two assists.

Pascal Dupuis and Arron Asham were both hurt in the game.

The Penguins are off until Friday, when they’ll host the New York Rangers.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are trying to bounce back after their loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, but they're not off to a good start, down 2-0 to the New Jersey Devils after the first period. Ilya Kovalchuk hit the scoreboard first, scoring on a penalty shot after Brooks Orpik covered the puck in the crease and the Devils were awarded a penalty shot.

Devils David Clarkson picked up the second goal on a power play after Jordan Staal was called for slashing. The goal was assisted by Patrik Elias and Ilya Kovalchuk. If the Penguins want to get back in the game, they'll need to stop making so many mental mistakes. The Penguins have been served up with eight penalty minutes already, compared to just two by the Devils.

Evgeni Malkin and the Penguins will try to knock off the Devils Saturday afternoon.

The Penguins have their last game of 2011 as they play the New Jersey Devils on the road at 3:00 PM Saturday. The game will be shown on ROOT Sports, and you can listen to the radio broadcast on 105.9 FM.

The Devils have won eight of their last 11 games, although four of those wins have come in overtime or in shootouts. Their last matchup was a 3-1 victory over the Sabres on Wednesday.

The Penguins are coming off a 4-2 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, but they had four straight wins before that. Evgeni Malkin has 12 points in the Pens' last five games.

The Pens and Devils last faced one another on January 22. The Pens won, 4-1, thanks to two goals from Jordan Staal. John Fischer at In Lou We Trust notes that a key to that game was the Pens dominating in the neutral zone, so that's something to watch for in Saturday's game as well.

A big reason why the Penguins looked so good against New Jersey in their game way back in October was due to the play in the neutral zone. The Devils struggled to move the puck consistently through it. The Penguins picked up those turnovers and mistakes by NJ and put the Devils on their heels for it, especially in the third period.

Marc-Andre Fleury will start in goal for the Penguins. Also, Deryk Engelland is back after serving a suspension for leaving his feet to hit a player in the head.
