The Pittsburgh Penguins missed a chance to pass the New York Rangers for the lead in both the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference Saturday night, as they fell to the Ottawa Senators 8-4.

Pittsburgh trailed 5-3 after 40 minutes, but cut the deficit to 5-4 when Sidney Crosby scored his third goal of the year 11:43 into the third period. However, from there, the Senators re-assumed control of the game as Jason Spezza made the score 6-4 with his 31st of the season at the 13:16 mark. Daniel Alfredsson, Ottawa's only multiple-goal scorer on the evening, made it 7-4 at the 17:05 mark before Colin Greening finished the scoring with 1:52 left.

With the loss, the Penguins fell three points behind the New York Rangers in the race for top spot in the Atlantic Division as the Rangers defeated Toronto 4-3 in a shootout. Meanwhile, Ottawa moved just one point behind the Boston Bruins for first place in the Northeast Division, though the Bruins now have three games in hand.

The Pittsburgh Penguins face the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night at Scotiabank Place.

The Pittsburgh Penguins travel to Ottawa to play the Senators tonight in a battle of two teams heading in opposite directions. The Penguins are the hottest team in hockey. Pittsburgh has won 13 of their last 14 games and has been revitalized both by the return of star center Sidney Crosby and the inspired play of Evgeni Malkin.

Malkin has been a terror on opposing teams lately. During Pittsburgh's 13-0-1 streak, the center has 13 goals and 11 assists. Crosby has been good too, though he's yet to score a goal since his return to the ice from a concussion.

Ottawa is struggling. The Senators have lost five of their last six games, and were defeated 5-1 by the Montreal Canadiens on Friday.

According to a report, Brad Thiessen will start in goal for the Pens tonight.
