Joe Vitale's hit on Danny Briere started the fracas between the Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers earlier this week. Briere is currently injured as a result. In the video below, he admits Vitale's hit was clean, but says Vitale was trying to injure him:

Look, everybody knows that the line that they put on the ice, at the end of the game, with a minute left, when the game is out of hand, everybody knows what the intent was. Was it a bad hit? No. It was a clean hit. But obviously, he knew what he was doing, he was obviously trying to hurt me.

The Pens' fourth line, the one on the ice at the time, featured Vitale, Arron Asham, Deryk Engelland, Matt Niskanen, and Craig Adams.

Vitale denies intending to hurt Briere (in fact, he says he didn't even know Briere was the one he was hitting), and he has not faced disciplinary action from the NHL.

Dejan Kovacevic notes that NBC analyst Mike Milbury has apologized to the Penguins for his offensive comments regarding the Penguins' dustup with the Flyers this weekend.
↵
↵
"I reached out to David Morehouse and the Penguins about the comments I made yesterday on Philadelphia radio. In hindsight, I realize what I said was inappropriate and wrong, and I want to apologize to the Penguins organization and their fans."
↵
↵
Milbury said that Pens coach Dan Bylsma, in response to provocations from Peter Laviolette, should have "taken off his skirt." He also referred to Sidney Crosby's "35th concussion," which wasn't particularly funny given Crosby's struggles with head injuries.
↵
These comments were, to put it mildly, moronic, especially from someone who's supposed to be an analyst. They were also sexist. Pens fans have spent the past couple days ranting about them. My guess is that this apology won't do much to quell Pens fans' anger.
↵
For more on the Penguins, check out PensBurgh.

A brawl in Sunday's game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers is going to end up costing a pair of coaches a little extra cash for their role in the altercation. Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette and Pittsburgh Penguins assistant Tony Granato both got slapped with fines from the NHL on Monday. As reported by Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Laviolette drew a $10,000 fine, while Granato got a $2,500 fine for arguing while their players battled it out on the ice.

The fight occurred after Penguins center Joe Vitale delivered a big hit on Flyers center Danny Briere. Vitale was not called for the hit, and said that he had not heard from the NHL since the game.
Mike Milbury, the NHL on NBC analyst famous for his loud mouth and terrible management decisions, once again chimed in on Sunday's donnybrook between the Penguins and Flyers. The fracas saw Flyers coach Peter Laviolette break a stick in the direction of the Penguins bench and then climb the boards to challenge Penguins coach Dan Bylsma after a perfectly legal hit. Naturally, Milbury had a few choice words for the Penguins' captain and head coach.
↵
Milbury stated to CBS Philly that Sidney Crosby "couldn't help himself because there's a little punk in [him]." Milbury also called Crosby a "goody two-shoes" who shouldn't complain after coming back from his "35th concussion." The "analyst" also added that Dan Bylsma "should have taken off his skirt and gone over there" to confront Laviolette.
↵
Obviously, Milbury is from the old-school NHL, where these types of events were normal, encouraged, and weren't analyzed on segments of ESPN's Outside the Lines. Milbury clearly has a problem with Crosby and the way the events unfolded (or failed to unfold) yesterday. Brayden Schenn decided to cheap shot the face of the league and skate to his bench while Crosby looked for the culprit. In Milbury's words, Schenn's cheap shot was "better late than never." This is the problem in the NHL today. There are still members of the old school who value fights and cheap shots over skill.
↵
And why should Bylsma confront Laviolette when he did nothing wrong? The Pens were down 6-3 and the Flyers put one of their most skilled lines out on the ice. Laviolette looked like a clown trying to fight the Penguins bench over a clean hit from 5-foot-11 'goon' Joe Vitale. Milbury knows a thing or two about looking foolish and making bad decisions. The only thing the Flyers and Milbury may have accomplished was awakening a sleeping giant.
↵
Just another great decision by Mike Milbury.
↵
For more on the Penguins, check out PensBurgh.

The end of Sunday's game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers featured a heated tiff between players after a hard hit by Penguin Joe Vitale on Philadelphia's Danny Briere. Here is a video of Vitale's hit and the mayhem that ensued.

It took approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the game for the officials to organize all of the penalties. All in all, a total of 52 penalty minutes were dished out. There has been no word on what disciplinary actions the NHL will take.

Powered by four unanswered goals, the Philadelphia Flyers were able to come into Pittsburgh and secure a 6-4 win against the Penguins.

With the score tied 2-2 going into the third, the Flyers broke the game open with three straight goals, with Wayne Simmonds picking up the game winning tally 2:35 into the final period.

After Jakub Voracek's 16th goal at 6:37 and Marc-Andre Bourdon's 3rd goal at 13:15, the Penguins were able to cut it down to 5-3 after Steve Sullivan put in his second goal of the game.

Voracek would put the game away with an empty-net goal with 1:15 to play.

The end of the game was marred by a braw following a Joe Vitale hit on Danny Briere late that led to numerous fights and a fiery exchange between Penguins assistant coach Tony Granato and Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette.

The Penguins have lost three out of their last four games and will look to build some momentum heading into the post-season Tuesday at home against the New York Rangers.

The Philadelphia Flyers relentlessness has paid off, as they have gained control of the game while tying the score at 2-2 against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The lone goal of the period came from ex-Penguin Max Talbot who deflected a shot past Fleury for his 19th goal of the season.

The Penguins have had chances on the power play, but have not been able to convert their opportunities as they are 0-for-4 with a man advantage. Philadelphia has had just one power play opportunity but did not score on it.

The Penguins outshot the Flyers 15-6 in the period and hold a 30-14 advantage for the game. Sergei Bobvrovsky has been stellar in net for the Flyers since his shaky start. He has 28 saves on the afternoon.
