The Pirates weren't able to sweep the Detroit Tigers at home this weekend, as the Bucs fell 3-2 in Sunday's series finale. Pittsburgh fell behind early, but made a decent rally behind Garrett Jones' two-run homer in the seventh inning.

Delmon Young scored Quintin Berry, who put the Tigers up in the first inning with two-run blast, for the game-winning run. Jason Verlander was marvelous for the Tigers, going the distance having given up five hits, two earned runs with seven strikeouts to add to his cred.

Kevin Correia pitched through six innings before Chris Resop and Juan Cruz pitched in relief. Resop gave up the game-winning run, so he was charged with the loss.

The Pirates fell behind the Tigers 2-0 after the first inning on Sunday, this since defeating Detroit in the previous two games of this interleague series. Quintin Berry's two-run homer in the first inning that gave the Tigers their advantage, and the Bucs have not since threatened.

Pittsburgh does have a pair of hits on the game, facing Tigers' ace Justin Verlander, who has a pair of strikeouts on the day. Alex Presley and Michael McKenry have the Pirates's two hits.

Even with a loss, Pittsburgh still will have won this series after having defeated the Detroit on Friday and Saturday, but the sweep is still within reach if the Pirates' bats are able to touch Verlander.

The Pirates made a series of roster moves right before Sunday’s game against the Detroit Tigers, claiming infielder Drew Sutton off waivers, demoting infielder Jordy Mercer, recalling reliever Bryan Morris, and placing Charlie Morton on the 60-day DL.

You may recall that the Pirates acquired Sutton a month ago, then almost immediately traded him to the Tampa Bay Rays, who had a spot open for him in the big leagues. That created a minor brouhaha in the Pittsburgh media, given the fact that the Pirates’ offense at the time was ferociously awful. But Sutton is just a journeyman and wasn’t worth the freakout, and now the Pirates have him back anyway. Don’t expect him to play that much. He replaced Mercer, who almost never saw the light of day.

Morris pitched well in Indianapolis and deserves a shot, but he might not get much of one — with Jeff Karstens scheduled to return soon from the disabled list, Morris’ stay in the big leagues might be short. He’s available Sunday against the Tigers; Sutton is not.

The Pirates are without Rod Barajas (who usually sits out on Sundays) and Neil Walker, which just makes facing Verlander that much more difficult. The Pirates already took the first two games of the series, and if they can’t manage the sweep Sunday afternoon, I can live with that, because this pitching matchup is brutal for them.

The Pittsburgh Pirates (38-32) host the Detroit Tigers (34-37) on Sunday at PNC Park, with the Pirates looking for a fourth straight win and an interleague series sweep of Detroit with a victory. Pittsburgh has won the first two games of the weekend series by identical 4-1 scores. The Pirates are 6-1 in their last seven games, outscoring opponents 43-14 in that span.

Kevin Correia (3-6, 4.12) will take the mound for the Pirates on Sunday. Correia is coming off his first home win of the season on Tuesday after pitching 5 1/3 scoreless innings against the Minnesota Twins. The right-hander is, however, a ghastly 0-10 with a 7.27 ERA in 14 home starts against National League opponents since becoming a Pirate last season.

Pittsburgh will have to defeat Justin Verlander (7-4, 2.57 ERA) to earn the sweep, no easy task. Detroit's ace dominates interleague play, amassing a 18-2 record with a 2.67 ERA in 24 career interleague starts. In his last eight matchups against the N.L., Verlander has been otherworldly, going 7-0 with a 1.62 ERA.

On Saturday, the Pittsburgh Pirates topped the Detroit Tigers, 4-1 at PNC Park. It marked Pittsburgh's third straight win. And then the New York Mets stumbled in their Subway Series contest against the New York Yankees by a score of 4-3. As a result, the team's are now tied for the second and last N.L. Wild Card spot, just behind the San Francisco Giants.

And sure, it might only be late June, but here's a look at the wild card standings as of 11 p.m. EST. The Giants currently lead their Bay Area rivals, the Oakland Athletics, 9-4 in the ninth inning.

On Saturday at PNC Park, the Pittsburgh Pirates (38-32) grabbed their sixth win in their last seven games, defeating the Detroit Tigers 4-1 in the second game of the teams' weekend interleague series. It was also their 12th win in their last 14 home games.

Perhaps credit starter Brad Lincoln for that. The right-hander struck out seven batters over six innings and allowed just one run, leaving the game with the Pirates leading 3-0. Those three runs came in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Andrew McCutchen drilled a three-run home run to center field. And as a result, never trailed. Closer Joel Hanrahan would record the save, his 19th of the season.

The series finale is scheduled for tomorrow at 1:35 p.m. EST.

Max Scherzer will pitch for the Detroit Tigers against the Pirates Saturday afternoon even though his younger brother Alex Scherzer took his own life earlier this week.

Max Scherzer will pitch today for the Tigers despite having lost his brother, Alex, 3 days ago. His courage is as immense as this tragedy.

Prayers for Max Scherzer & his family. Scherzer pitching for #Tigers today at #Pirates after brother committed suicide. Can’t even imagine.

I’m a Pirates fan, but even I will find it hard not to root for Scherzer on a day like this. Not that anything he does will bring his brother back, obviously. I wish the Scherzer family the best.
