After 14 years, the BCS is dead. A playoff is coming to the Football Bowl Subdivision.

On Tuesday, a presidential oversight committee, composed of university presidents meeting in Washington D.C., approved a four-team seeded playoff that will begin with the 2014 regular season. A selection committee will choose the four participants, with the No. 1 seed to play the No. 4 seed and the No. 2 seed to play the No. 3 seed. The winners will then square off in a national championship game.

The 12-year deal will run through the 2025 season.

"A four-team playoff doesn't go too far; it goes just the right amount," Virginia Tech president Charles Sterger said. "We are very pleased with this arrangement, even though some issues ... remain to be finalized."

The presidents also announced that the bowl games will rotate as the sites for the national championship games and semifinals.

BCS commissioners will recommend a seeded-four team playoff that will feature the "best four teams" as chosen by a selection committee, sources told CBSSports.com Wednesday.

The Presidential Oversight Committee ultimately must approve the playoff on Tuesday in Washington D.C.. The playoff will begin after the 2014 regular season.

The plan still has to has to be approved, but if and/or when it is the changes will not go into effect until the 2014 season. The goal will be to select the "best four teams" and face off at predetermined neutral sites.
