Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin felt good about his team after they beat the Indianapolis Colts 26-24 on Sunday night at Heinz Field.

While the team certainly wasn't perfect, Tomlin was satisfied with the way the team is making progress.

"There is a lot to be corrected, that is a part of August football for us but it's good to make those corrections while you win."

No group on the team has been watched closer than the offense with Todd Haley's new style, and so far Tomlin is pleased with the results.

"I did, and not only the first team offense but everyone. It was better. We challenged them more with what we asked them to do and they did a relatively good job. Again, we're still working individually and collectively."

On the flip side of things, Tomlin wasn't thrilled with his return teams after they struggled to generate much yardage throughout the contest.

"I didn't like our return game though. I thought our return game as below the line and we can get better in that area."

The preseason will continue with a contest against the Buffalo Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium on Saturday.

Pittsburgh's 26-24 victory over Indianapolis in Sunday night's preseason matchup was about as thrilling as a preseason game can get, down to the last-second field goal, but everybody knows the true winners and losers in preseason games aren't decided by who has the most points on the scoreboard when the clock hits zeroes. Behind the Steel Curtain took a look at which fringe players impressed in their hopes of surviving roster cuts and which did nothing to help their cause as the Steelers prepare to trim their roster from 90 to 53 by the time the regular season comes around.

Coming out on the good side were a variety of Steelers' offensive players, including a pass-catcher whose chances of catching on are very dependent on his preseason play:

WR David Gilreath - 4 catches for 78 yards, two of them being third down catches in the fourth quarter, Gilreath made his presence known after being seen as an also-ran in the battle for the team's 5WR spot behind Toney Clemons and Tyler Beiler. The rookie out of Wisconsin found soft spots in zone defense and looked great after the catch, showing speed and athleticism far more frequently than any other fringe-roster receiver has to this point.

Not impressing were some of the people responsible for making sure Pittsburgh's backup signal-callers stayed on their feet -- a particularly disappointing trend considering the Steelers are scrambling to piece together an offensive line this season.

OT Mike Adams and OL Kelvin Beachum: The Steelers' 2s and 3s generally did not play well, but the performances of Adams and Beachum were particularly troubling. Nevermind potential, (Jerrod) Johnson as well as QB Charlie Batch were afforded little opportunity to get the ball down the field and dealt with far more pressure than did their Colts contemporaries. Beachum, who lined up both at guard and tackle, was flagged for holding twice, and Adams allowed 2.5 sacks from his left tackle position and was nearly driven back into Johnson due to a bullrush from a Colts defender.

Not mentioned as a loser: Indianapolis' Andrew Luck, who the Steelers welcomed to the NFL with a pair of picks, including Ike Taylor's 49-yard touchdown return.

A late field goal by Danny Hrapmann gave the Pittsburgh Steelers a come-from-behind win over the Indianapolis Colts 26-24. Jerrod Johnson engineered a 15-play, 65-yard drive that took more than five minutes off the clock. Hrapmann's 23-yard field goal was deflected but had just enough to clear the crossbar with just 23 seconds remaining.

Ben Roethlisberger had his first pass of the day intercepted but came back to throw for 81 yards including a 57-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Brown. Charlie Batch took over and failed to put any points on the board finishing 7 of 10 for 84 yards. Johnson came on in the fourth quarter and completed 4 of 5 for 65 yards

Jonathan Dwyer led the way on the ground for the Steelers, rushing eight times for 43 yards. Jason Ford added eight carries for 42 yards and had a couple of nice runs on the final Steelers drive. David Gilreath caught four passes for 78 yards while Brown finished with two catches for 75 yards and a touchdown. Danny Hrapmann came on in relief of Shaun Suisham and connected on all four of his field goal attempts.

Andrew Luck threw for 175 yards and two interceptions but did pick up a rushing touchdown.

The Steelers' defense got back on track to start the second half, holding backup quarterback Drew Stanton and the Colts to a three-and-out on the first possession of the third quarter. Lineback Mortty Ivy broke through and blocked the punt on fourth down, setting Pittsburgh up with great field position deep in Indianapolis territory. A penalty pushed the Steelers back, though, and they had to settle for a 25-yard field goal from Danny Hrapmann to tie the game, 17-17.

Pittsburgh couldn't sustain their momentum, as Stanton directed a nine-play, 74-yard drive that culminated in a touchdown pass to Griff Whalen that gave the Colts a 24-17 lead. Steelers backup Charlie Batch followed with his best series of the night, leading a 64-yard drive that ended in a Hrapmann 39-yard field goal.

Batch has completed 7-of-10 passes for 84 yards since replacing Ben Roethlisberger in the second quarter. Baron Batch has eight carries for 19 yards rushing and David Gilreath has two catches for 48 yards.

After the Pittsburgh Steelers controlled the first quarter, the Colts came back in the second with 17 unanswered points to take a 17-14 lead into halftime.

The Colts began the second quarter by finishing off a 10-play, 80-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run by Donald Brown that cut the Steelers' lead to 14-7.

Rookie quarterback Andrew Luck had the Colts driving again before their next drive ended with another interception, his second of the game. Luck's pass was juggled by receiver T.Y. Hilton, and dropped right into the hands of Steelers defensive back Cortez Allen.

Ben Roethlisberger came out for one series in the second quarter before giving way to Charlie Batch, whose first drive ended with a punt. Luck then helped engineer another 80-yard drive, finishing it off with a one-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 14. After forcing another Steelers punt, Luck led the Colts on a five-play, 31-yard drive that resulted in a 53-yard Adam Vinatieri field goal at the quarter horn.

Roethlisberger finished 5-of-9 for 81 yards with a touchdown and an interception during his stint in the game. Running back Jonathan Dwyer had a nice half with seven carries for 39 yards. Antonio Brown has two catches for 75 yards, including a 57-yard touchdown reception.

Luck finished the half 16-of-25 for 175 yards and two interceptions. Donald Brown leads the Indy charge with six carries for 30 yards, while receiver Reggie Wayne caught six passes for 74 yards.

The Pittsburgh Steelers overcame an early turnover to take a 14-0 lead over Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts.

Pittsburgh's opening drive ended abruptly when Antoine Bethea stepped in front of Ben Roethlisberger's first pass for an interception. The Steelers held Luck to a three and out on their opening possession and the Steelers took the ball back deep in their own territory. After a couple of Roethlisberger passes netted a first down, he hooked up with wideout Antonio Brown for a 57 yard touchdown.

Later in the quarter, Pittsburgh defensive back Ike Taylor jumped an intended pass to Reggie Wayne and returned it 49 yards for the Steelers' second touchdown.

Roethlisberger completed 5 of 7 passes for 81 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Jonathan Dwyer finished the quarter with four carries for 14 yards while Brown had two catches for 75 yards.

Andrew Luck had a much tougher first quarter than last week against the Rams, going 6 of 12 for 76 yards and an interception. Reggie Wayne has two catches for 23 yards for the Colts.

Pittsburgh Steelers Linebacker Stevenson Sylvester will miss three to four weeks after tearing the MCL in his left knee, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Sunday. Sylvester was scheduled to be a backup at inside linebacker for the Steelers, and the length of recovery time means the injury will cause him to miss a portion of the regular season.

The third-year veteran out of Utah has seen limited time in his first two seasons with the Steelers. In 31 total games, he has logged one start and has recorded 21 total tackles while forcing two fumbles.

The Steelers have already been hurt by injury at linebacker during the offseason. Pro-Bowler James Harrison has missed all of training camp and will likely miss games early in the schedule.

The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback rotation will get a bit of a shakeup Sunday, as the Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette reports backup quarterback Byron Leftwich will not play against the visiting Indianapolis Colts (8 p.m. ET on NBC), instead, Charlie Batch and Jerrod Johnson will split playing time after starter Ben Roethlisberger exits. SB Nation's Steelers blog, Behind The Steel Curtain, explains:

Leftwich got an extended look in Pittsburgh's preseason-opening loss to Philadelphia Aug. 9, and after taking a shot to the head by Eagles CB Domonique Rodgers-Cromartie (a hit that cost him $21,000), perhaps the Steelers decided it was a better time to give him a break.

More likely, it's just a competition between Batch and Johnson for the team's third quarterback position.

The news means Batch will play for the first time this season after not playing last Thursday, while Johnson will look to try to impress the Steelers coaches as he tries to hang on a roster spot.

The pressure is really more on Johnson, who must outplay Batch to stay with the team past the preseason and off its practice squad.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has commended Johnson on his work ethic and attitude, and he's preparing for this game with all intentions of proving he belongs.
