Mountaineers Lose Kevin Noreen For Season

The West Virginia Mountaineers announced today that freshman forward Kevin Noreen has undergone surgery on his right knee and will miss the remainder of the 2010-11 basketball season. Noreen is expected to file for a medical redshirt.

Noreen, a true freshman, has appeared in only seven games this season.  In 39 minutes of action Noreen has tallied 18 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists. That's a great stat line if it can be put together in 39 sequential minutes.  While it was doubtful that Noreen would crack the rotation and give the Mountaineers serious minutes in conference play his presence added depth to the frontcourt.  It seems likely that the Mountaineers will feel his loss most on the practice court instead of in games.

Mike Casazza of the Charleston Daily Mail points out that it's been a disastrous season for Bob Huggins' 2010 recruiting class. Losing Noreen to injury for the season means that no 2010 recruit will have any sort of impact on the Mountaineer team. The three other members of the 2010 class were suspended indefinitely, medically disqualified and declared academically ineligible.
