West Virginia athletic director Oliver Luck, a former WVU quarterback, entered school with Talley in 1978.

"What a tremendous honor for not only a great football player, but a great person and one of the best to ever wear a Mountaineer football uniform," Luck said. "This is a great day not only for Darryl, but for West Virginia University."

Talley played 14 seasons in the NFL, most of them with the Buffalo Bills, before retiring after 1996. He also briefly played for the Atlanta Falcons and Minnesota Vikings. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 1990 and 1991.
