Things got tense at the start of the fourth quarter when the Terps scored their third straight unanswered touchdown, added the conversion, and cut the Mountaineers’ lead to a mere three points.
Geno Smith and company drove back but couldn’t get the ball into the end zone after an impressive drive and had to settle for a field goal.
The Terrapins were on fire balancing a successful rushing attack with some white hot passing from O’Brien, who at one point had completed fourteen straight passes. It would, however, be O’Brien who undid the Terrapins valiant comeback when he was intercepted by Eain Smith with under two minutes remaining sealing a six point victory for the Mountaineers.
At times today, the Mountaineer offense looked unstoppable, but stalled out late. The offense isn’t going to be the problem with this team
On defense however, the Mountaineers seemed overly susceptible to the run, allowing nearly five and half yards per rush. It seemed that Maryland didn’t realize they could be so successful running the football until late in the game. Once they started winning the ground battle, everything came into play but the Terps were unable to make plays on the final drive to seal the deal.
