Following their disappointing loss to the Texas Tech Red Raiders, the West Virginia Mountaineers checked in at No. 13 in the first official BCS rankings of the 2012 season.
West Virginia had been ranked in the top five in the AP, USA Today and Harris polls before getting destroyed 49-14 by Texas Tech on Saturday. The Mountaineers fell to 15th in the Harris and USA Today polls, which are both used in determining the BCS rankings.
As for the computer part of the rankings, West Virginia was helped by Kenneth Massey's ranking system, coming in at No. 9. On the other hand, Jeff Sagarin's rankings had the Mountaineers only at No. 17. The other four ranking systems had the Mountaineers in the 12-15 range.
Naturally, the undefeated Alabama Crimson Tide opened on top of the rankings. The top five was rounded out by Florida, Oregon, Kansas State and Notre Dame.
